Cognition Matters

Cognition Matters exists to enable individuals with brain injury (stroke, head injury, dementia) to have a fuller and more fulfilling life where their strengths and interests can be expressed and their cognitive needs are addressed appropriately.

The business is formed as a social enterprise with the objectives to:

  • offer to statutory and independent health organizations standardized and validated measures of cognitive and social abilities, to inform rehabilitation, treatment, discharge and life planning. This includes providing a web-based reporting and diagnosis facility  which offers a visual ‘snapshot’ of the ‘cognitive profile’ of an individual, to be used in clinical decision making.
  • train therapists on the use of standardized cognitive assessments generated by the company, extending to provide Continued Professional Development packages for professionals allied to medicine.
  • develop teaching add-ons, including sets of neuropsychology DVDs,  for the general educational purposes.
  • provide a neuropsychology assessment and consultancy services.
  • build a community of healthcare professionals who work together for the continuous improvement of rehabilitation services for individuals with cognitive impairments.

We are operating in a climate of increased awareness of stroke and the effects of post-stroke cognitive impairments on long term life quality.  However, there is a major shortage of cognitive care in the health services which fails to meet the demand for assessment and services (Royal College of Physicians, 2009).  Our company exists to support this growing gap.  We will work closely with care and charitable organizations to advocate the importance in addressing cognitive needs to improve effectiveness and efficiency of care.  The company is founded by Prof Glyn Humphreys, Dr Wai-Ling Bickerton and Prof Jane Riddoch, a world-class expert team in cognitive neuropsychology with a conviction to maximize impact of our academic research.  We have established an extensive network of therapists and psychologists both nationally and internationally who recognise and support our work.
